With the contribution of the LIFE programme of the European Union - LIFE14 ENV/GR/000611

In line with the global acceleration to Meet the ambitions of the Paris agreement, Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) aims to achieve ‘Zero Emission Tokyo’ to make Tokyo more sustainable.

As a stepping stone to a sustainable future, TMG will offset all CO₂ emissions which are expected to be generated across Tokyo during the four days of opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Carbon credits for the excess CO₂ emission reductions in the Tokyo Cap and -Trade Program will be used to achieve ‘Tokyo Zero Carbon 4 Days in 2020’.

TMG launched the world’s first cap - and - trade program in April 2010 which aims to reduce emissions from large-scale facilities. The covered facilities have achieved significant CO₂ reductions, and 10 million tCO₂ of carbon credits have been issued.

TMG will call for donating the carbon credits to those facilities, and offset all the emissions from the entire area of Tokyo to achieve Tokyo Zero Carbon 4 Days in 2020.
